The 4th Workshop on Language Technology for Cultural Heritage, Social Sciences, and Humanities
will be held in conjunction with the
19th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence - ECAI 2010,
which will take place in August 16-20, 2010, in Lisbon, Portugal.
The workshop is a follow-up to
LaTeCH-07 at ACL,
LaTeCH-08 at LREC and
LaTeCH-09 at EACL,
on similar topics.
About the Workshop
The advent of digital age presents the opportunity to cultural heritage (CH) institutes, such as museums, archives, and libraries,
to reach a wider audience. However, it also imposes changes in the manner of preservation, management, presentation and research in CH material.
A similar development is currently underway in the “soft” sciences, such as social sciences and humanities (SH),
where increasing amounts of text documents are being made available in digital form and where the use of emerging technologies
presents both challenges and opportunities in data research, exchange, management and visualisation.
In order to truely unlock the knowledge contained in CH and SH collections, it is necessary to develop novel technologies that support
the information and entertainment needs of individual users. Techniques from artificial intelligence are particularly well suited
to help users to make the best possible use of these digitised collections. As information access is often obtained via the (mostly textual)
metadata level, language technology in particular plays an important role.
Other areas of AI, including knowledge representation, multi-modal systems and user modelling,
are also relevant.
The workshop aims to foster interaction between researchers working on all aspects of AI and language technology applied to
CH and SH domains, and experts from institutions who are testing deployed technologies and formulating improved use cases.
