Imagine the instance base as divided over an instance space, a 2D grid on which similar instances are positioned close to each other. Imagine a subpart in which instances are positioned with "ear" in the middle.

The disjunctivity of this little space is evident: with one or two letters different, several different pronuniations of "ear" are found.

Now suppose that the new instance "_hearts" is presented to the memory-based system.
